An Axiomatic Approach to Multidimensional Poverty Measurement via Fuzzy Sets

چکیده

Multidimensional poverty concentrates on deprivations in the living standard of a population in terms of functioning failures of different quality of life attributes such as per capita real GDP, life expectancy at birth and educational attainment. More precisely, a threshold level is specified for each attribute and shortfalls of quantities of different attributes from respective thresholds for different individuals are aggregated into an overall indicator of poverty. However, there may be cases in which one is unable to determine precisely the status of a person with respect to an attribute, that is, whether he is poor or non-poor. Since the theory of fuzzy sets enables us to talk of imprecisions in a meaningful way, this paper makes an attempt to extend multidimensional poverty measurement to a fuzzy environment. Suitable fuzzy analogues are proposed for various standard index properties. Possible fuzzy indices associated with some multidimensional poverty indices are also proposed.

Measuring Multidimensional Poverty: an Empirical Comparison of Various Approaches

This paper makes a systematic comparison of four approaches to multidimensional poverty analysis based respectively on the theory of fuzzy sets, information theory, efficiency analysis and axiomatic derivations of poverty indices. The database was the 1995 Israeli Census that provided information on the ownership of various durable goods. There appears to be a fair degree of agreement between t...

Multidimensional Poverty Measurement with the Weak Focus Axiom

The present paper defines an axiomatic framework for multidimensional poverty measurement that fits a weak version of the focus axiom and is consistent with Duclos, Sahn, and Younger’s (2006) “well-being” approach of poverty identification. This slackening of the tradtional axiomatic framework is appealing for two reasons. First, regarding the issue of poverty identification, the approach is le...

On $L$-double fuzzy rough sets

ur aim of this  paper  is  to introduce the concept of $L$-double fuzzy rough sets in whichboth constructive and axiomatic approaches are used. In constructive approach, a pairof $L$-double fuzzy lower (resp. upper) approximation operators is defined  and the basic properties of them  are studied. From the viewpoint of the axiomatic approach, a set of axioms is constructed to characterize the $L...

L-valued Fuzzy Rough Sets

In this paper, we take a GL-quantale as the truth value table to study a new rough set model—L-valued fuzzy rough sets. The three key components of this model are: an L-fuzzy set A as the universal set, an L-valued relation of A and an L-fuzzy set of A (a fuzzy subset of fuzzy sets). Then L-valued fuzzy rough sets are completely characterized via both constructive and axiomatic approaches.

Fuzzy Multidimensional Poverty Index

Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) is a novel measure of poverty that is being used by United Nations Development Programme. The MPI is the answer to the call for a multidimensional view of poverty (Sen and Anand, 1997). It evaluates poverty at the individual level, with poor people being those who are deprived in multiple dimensions of well-being, and also the extent of poverty by assessing ...
